Jewellery Making Skills Stages 4 to 9

Consolidate and Advance Jewellery Making Skills Stages 4 to 9.

Once you have completed ‘Introduction to Jewellery Making Skills Stages 1-3’,  you can further consolidate, advance and improve your jewellery making skills in Stages 4-9.

Each Stage is  either a five – week course for 3.5 hours per week or a four week course with extended hours(Thursday and Friday morning). The cost of each stage is $495.00 (inclusive of GST). There is a consumable cost of $30.00 per course.

You will learn more advanced jewellery making skills including:

  • sawing,
  • soldering,
  • shaping and filing,
  • melting metal,
  • gem setting in various forms,
  • shaping ring shanks,
  • finishing and polishing and 
  • use of Bonny Doon metal press.

Your making skills will be assessed at each stage and feedback given on areas for improvement. There are set projects for each stage, which are designed to consolidate your skills. You design stage 6 to 9 projects and your proposed fabrication process will be discussed with the teacher.

The aim of the latter projects is for you to commence independent design and making.


Stage Four – Straight Collet Ring with Facetted Gem.

The skills developed in making the straight collet ring include:

  • sawing,
  • filing and use of emery papers,
  • soldering,
  • shaping with a hammer,
  • facetted gem setting, and 
  • finishing skills.

Stage Five –Tapered Collet and Split Shank Ring with Facetted Gem.

The skills developed in the fabrication of the ring include:

  • making a tapered collet,
  • accurate sawing of a split shank,
  • use of rolling mills,
  • setting and finishing skills.

Stage Six  – Facetted Gem Drop Earrings.

The skills developed in making facetted gem drop earrings include:

  • melting metal,
  • filing and use of emery papers,
  • facetted gem setting,
  • small jump rings, and 
  • soldering and finishing.

Stage Seven – Large Gem Set Band Ring with Bezels and Edge Wires.

You design your own ring with either multiple facetted or cabochon set gemstones and discuss the fabrication process with the teacher.

 Skills developed include:

  • shaping the tapered domed ring shank,
  • multiple gem settings facetted or cabochon,
  • soldering twisted and straight edge wires and 
  • finishing techniques.

Stage Eight – Pendant and Chain with Surface Decoration and Gems.

You design your own three dimensional pendant and chain and discuss your fabrication process with the teacher.

Skills developed include:

  • surface decoration e.g. hammering, roller printing, Keum-Boo,
  • gem setting on a three dimensional form,
  • shaped wire chain making and 
  • making a single bale or fitting for chain.

Stage Nine – Earrings with Set Gems.

You design your own earrings, use the Bonny Doon to press the silver form and discuss your fabrication process with the teacher.

 Skills developed include:

  • use of Bonny Doon metal press,
  • setting gems on the earring form,
  • make earring wires and
  • explore new finishes.

Your Own Projects Stage 9 plus.

Students discuss their design and proposed fabrication process with Philip Noakes and make the the project with tuition/supervision as required.

You can purchase silver from the studio for all projects and or buy your own silver.

We have scheduled classes in 2023 on:

  • Thursday morning (9.30am – 2pm)
  • Friday morning(9.30am -2pm)
  • Saturday mornings (9am – 1pm)

If you miss a class you can catch up on a   Saturday morning subject to available bench space.  You will need to confirm the date and time with the studio.
